Get on The Tragedy Bandwagon!

Wednesday, December 3rd, 2008 by dave

Fresh off of a killer set in the first night of LebowskiFest, I give you…
Tragedy- The greatest Bee Gees All Metal Tribute Band in the NY Tri-State Area.

Seriously, though, these guys were extremely funny on stage. Think of a mash up of Iron Maiden, the Bee Gees and a healthy dose of Spinal Tap.Their renditions (how dare you think covers, you mere mortal) of How Deep Is your Love, Dancin’, and Staying Alive (featured here) were just killer.

Googles Gone….. hold on it’s back…..

Tuesday, November 4th, 2008 by Andy

My co-workers are probably tired of listening to my bleating about a recent intermittent denial of service from Google related websites on my iMac. Sites affected include Google, Blogger and YouTube, possibly others. Service from these sites had become patchy and losing Google in particular was tough. Ask.com? Yahoo? Bah! It was like losing a ‘hyper limb’, a dead end in the information super highway, I was lost. Rebooting did nothing to help neither did renewing DHCP or manually setting an IP address.

After several fruitless forays into the annals of the internet, I finally came across the answer in a MetaFilter post this morning. Without being able to pinpoint the trigger ( I think it may have been a recent software update) the issue seemed to link back to the DNS server(s) set in my Network Preferences. I changed them to the two suggested in the article and Bingo! I was back in business.

So here’s the link to the article again lest this heinous affliction ever affect you, or anyone else. LINK

Also a quote from the post in case it gets lost in the mists of time:

“I see this problem all the time with people’s Macs at home. It’s most definitely a DNS issue. It is always solved by setting your DNS server to a known good DNS server, like 4.2.2.2. To do that, go to Apple menu>System Preferences>Network. Then select your Airport connection, click Configure, then look at the TCP/IP tab. Enter 4.2.2.2, hit enter, then enter 4.2.2.3 on the second line. Then click Apply Now. You may have to restart your web browser for the change to be evident.

I think this is less of a problem with a specific DNS provider and more of a problem with certain wireless routers’ ability to properly share correct DNS information with Macs…..

Although I’m not using a wireless router it seems to have done the job. Choose your ethernet connection settings instead if you are on a wired network.

Who Moved my Mousse Cake?

Friday, October 10th, 2008 by Andy

Yes, mousse cake, chocolate mousse cake, the more you say it, the better it feels.

Actually this post is about the the apparent dissappearance of Foley’s Bakery and my need for a mousse cake. I anyone knows whether or not Foleys is still around somewhere then please let me know because their Chocolate Mousse cake was the pinacle of errrrr mousse cake. I used to frequent their bakery when they were still on Congress Street in Portland near the First Parish Church. At Easter they would make little cakes shaped like chicks (the feathered kind) and I’d buy one for Ollie who was about two at the time. Their mousse cake was the perfect birthday cake. Anyway I’m happy to say that the ‘patisserie’ (I’m calling it that because it looks like one)  at Whole Foods is doing pretty well at filling the gap. If Foley’s CMC was a perfect 10 then I’d say Whole Foods are hovering at about 8. They do some fresh fruit tarts that are mighty fine too. I look forward to slowly working my way through some of their offerings. Pictured, a CMC, probably larger than the one at Whole Foods although they do come in 2 sizes…….

Members Of Twisted Sister Now Willing To Take It

Wednesday, October 8th, 2008 by Ryan

NEW YORK—In a stunning reversal of their long-stated reluctance to take it, members of heavy-metal band Twisted Sister announced Monday that, after 24 years of fervent refusal, they are now willing to take it. Read More

Hi, my name is Dave…and I am a Fanboy.

Thursday, October 2nd, 2008 by dave

“Hi Dave”

“I have been a Fanboy for 36 years. I remember my first Mego Super Heroes  action figure- Captain America- and the last one I ever bought, Captain Marvel on Ebay in 2005″

“So, Dave, what brings you to our group?”

“Well, I read this article today, about the new Watchmen movie…”

“AHHH” “Gasp” “Ooooooooo”

“….yeah, I know. March is too far away. Can’t wait that long. I’m re-reading it for the 5th time, and now its just killing me to know that its next year. Not this year, NEXT year. I mean, the Dark Knight was good, but this could blow it out if the water. Seriously.”

“AHHH” “Gasp” “Ooooooooo”

After taking a look at this photo, Zach Snyder is trying hard to get this one right. I respect Alan Moore and his work, and his feelings on what the movie world has attempted to do to his comics worlds. V for Vendetta could have been great, but the Wachovski’s pretty much ruined the story. Their story was based on the characters Moore created, and they would have been better off creating a new set of characters with the story they wove. Christ, Alan Moore originally wanted to use the Charleton Comics characters but decided against, creating his own that were similar.  I get that they (the movie industry) ruined The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, V for Vendetta and From Hell.

I think he might want to hold judgement on this one, though. I’m going to drink a big glass of the Kool-Aid, and say that Watchmen could be great. I hope it is. There was a viewing of 25 minutes of footage of the movie in LA. How the hell does a mere mortal get in on something lke this? What connections do you need?

Either way, there’s going to be alot of waiting. At least there’s LebowskiFest before, but damn its a long way to March.

What difference does a font choice make?

Monday, September 8th, 2008 by Gloria

This weekend I watched a movie named Recount. (HBO movie…which I got through Netflix). Ok, my take on it may have been skewed by my political views and my work in this new media field…..but guess what - the history of the United States for the last 8 years may have all come down to a choice of fonts!

You may remember at the time that there was a question of many people in Florida having punched the wrong selection - voting for Pat Buchanan when they meant to vote for Al Gore. But did you know that the ballot was confusing because of a concern that putting all the candidates in a row on one side of the ballot would mean a smaller font that might be harder to read? So instead, the candidate names were on both sides of the ballot. Now at the time I thought this was silly, until I saw the machines they were using in the movie - both slots for punching the ballot were beside Al Gore’s name AND Buchannan - you had to know whether to choose one or two in between the two names.

Just think, a choice for a smaller font may have driven the history of the world in a very different direction!

Fascinating movie by the way - Recount with Kevin Spacey
