God Bless the BBC

Thursday, May 1st, 2008 by Andy

Ok so I’m a resident alien, but you have to take your hats off to the BBC for being on the leading edge of global news reporting. With stories like these, why wouldn’t you wan the BBC Global news as you homepage?

CNN Shirts?…

Friday, April 25th, 2008 by Jonathan

I noticed a little t-shirt icon next to the CNN headlines today, upon further clicking I learned that CNN is selling custom t-shirts with dated headlines as of today… Come on now!! Why can’t the headlines just be the headlines? It’s bad enough that the deliverers (those reading the teleprompter and offering their personal “spin” on what’s happening) have become a-list celebrities, but now we’re expected to cover our bodies with headlines! I imagine the shirts are geared to be collectibles someday, like an old McDonald’s Star Wars cup or Rolling Stones ’72 Tour poster, but since when is Ted Turner in the business of selling collectibles? This is just another step in the evolution of news becoming entertainment and not a practical source of information.

As a footnote, if anybody wants to buy a Max the Millennium Beanie Baby, I have one for sale for $3700. picture-3.png

Would he be even more handsome called Ryan?

Wednesday, March 26th, 2008 by Ryan

Ryan ClooneyGeorge Clooney regularly tops “gorgeous man” polls, yet his is the first name least associated with attractiveness in a new study. Might this have slowed his climb to movie stardom? Can a name really determine your fate? Elizabeth and James are considered the most successful sounding first names, Lucy and Jack the luckiest and Sophie and Ryan the most attractive. Read More

Night Owl

Night OwlHere he is in all his splendour…….

As you can see it’s far from the glamorous suit Night Owl is wearing in Rich’s post. Nice Utility belt though.

How about this guy? Now that’s more like it! Nice bag.

The Watchmen Movie…Whatever

Tuesday, March 18th, 2008 by Rich

Watchmen Comic Book CoverI’ve recently lent my Watchmen graphic novel to Andy as we’ve been trading reading material of late.

Nite OwlHe sent me a link to a blog about the upcoming Watchmen movie. The blog got me wondering why every superhero movie has to have costumes with armor that shows ripped abs and overly developed muscles. The epitome (or is it nadir?) of this was the nipple-enhanced Bat Suit in the crappiest of the early crappy Batman movies.

I mean, look at Nite Owl here. I’m not sure what his story will be in the movie, but in the comics he’s a retired super with a pot belly. I don’t see any pot belly in this photo, do you?

Anyway, the blog mentions that the movie will be released on 03.09.09. As I said to Andy, I’ll believe it when I walk out of the theater complaining about how they got all the characters wrong and how it should have been a mini-series on TV.

Is It Any Wonder Mainers Are Overweight?

Monday, March 17th, 2008 by Rich

Yesterday I took a look at the 22nd Annual Audience Reader’s Poll in the Portland Press Herald and I came away sad.

Best Restaurant went to Fore Street. No qualms there, it’s probably my favorite restaurant in Maine as well. Fresh, delicious food impeccably prepared. However, it barely beat out the Olive Garden.

Are you frickin’ kidding me? The f’in Olive Garden came in second?!? That’s like saying the second best “Cheap Eats” in Maine is McDonalds.

Oops, my bad. McDonald’s came in first in that category. WTF?!? With Olive Garden and McDonalds nearly taking the top two food positions that Mainers prefer, I wonder if it’s any surprise that Mainers are so unhealthy and overweight?

Now, obviously national chains may have an unfair advantage to one-site shops. Market Street Eats, one of my favorite lunch spots (and a perfect Cheap Eats joint), can only serve people within walking distance of it’s one store in Portland, Maine. It must be good because it just expanded. Still, it completes with all the McD’s throughout the state for the questionable privilege of being the Audience Reader’s Choice.

The latest offering of The Battlestar Galactica Cast re-creating the Last Supper brings my collection to two.

The First one, which I have had for a while, is posed by the characters in Star-Wars:

Yank Tanks, No Thanks

Wednesday, February 27th, 2008 by Andy

Actually It was my wifes’ father and his shotgun. But seriously, I have ‘borrowed’ my Brother-in-laws truck a few times and whilst fun to drive and great for picking up paving or taking dismantled concrete steps to the dump, I couldn’t see myself driving around in one. I put it in the same class as the chainsaw and jackhammer, two other things I thoroughly enjoy using but will probably never own.

Anyway, in Britain we have these:

Reliant Robin

Why would we want your trucks? Yes, that’s 3 wheels, great in the snow.

Pick-Up Trucks Big in the UK

Wednesday, February 27th, 2008 by Rich

Andy, I’m curious if your love for pickups is what got you to come to the U.S. in the first place?

It turns out that a lot of your ex-countrymen–and they’re primarily men apparently, have fallen in love with the pickup, if this story from the BBC service can be believed.

Here’s a great quote:

There’s something distinctly American about the pick-up, all Bruce Springsteen and O Brother, Where Art Thou.

OK, obviously there’s little more American than the Boss, but do Brits really think of O Brother as being what we’re all about? This is kind of like how they call pit bulls “American Pit Bulls” in the UK. Well, maybe it’s not like that at all, but I never liked the American Pit Bull thing, either.

My favorite part: how they call pickups “Yank Tanks.”

Snow Days in Scarborough

Thursday, February 7th, 2008 by Cybele

Here we are in February and we are on our 5th snow day. As if there aren’t enough staff development days and early release days already, they seem to cancel school at the first sign of a snowflake…I remember back when I was a kid, I’d lay in bed at 6am and listen for the local fire department to sound it’s very loud siren to signal a snow day…than happily roll over and go back to sleep.

Now, as a parent, I see snow days as more of a nuisance than anything. Ok it’s one thing if we’re having a real blizzard or something, but today, the bulk of the snow fell overnight, and the storm is moving away as we speak. All the weather stations reported Winter Storm Warning until 10 am. Why couldn’t they just have had late start, Snow Delay? It certainly would have made more sense.

Now my gym down the road, Lifestyles is ALWAYS open during the storms. I just love that. Their staff drive reliable 4-wheel drive vehicles. We do live in Maine after all, it snows and we all should know how to drive in the snow.

My childcare is also AWESOME when it comes to winter weather. Children’s Time has always stayed open during snow storms because they cater to working parents. Ok, once or twice they have closed early, but bless them for staying open. They will even take our Kindergardener on school snow days so she can hang out with her 3-year old sister and mom and dad can get some work done.
