Mother’s Love: A Seagull Story

Now that's motherly love

Now that's motherly love

So I’m watching this mother seagull on the rooftop across from my window, as I’ve been doing day in and day out since she built her nest. In the past two weeks it’s be rainging almost every day but I never see her get off that nest. It’s amazing, but I guess the kind of things mothers do all the time.

I was thinking that what happens when she has to stretch her legs or relieve herself? Does the father seagull (I see him hanging around sometimes, reading the sports page and such), take her place? Is that embarassing for the male seagull? Is it like the seagull equivalent of my wife asking me to hold her purse?

How Low Can You Go?

Wednesday, April 29th, 2009 by Andy

I have been listening to some great food ideas on NPR during my homeward commute this week. They are running a spot all week where the challenge is to feed a family of four for $10.00 or less. In these fiscally responsible times it’s a great idea, plus it’s nice to get away from spaghetti and meatballs for a while.

Spinach With Chick PeasMonday night was a Spanish dish, Spinach with Chick Peas. As these are two ingredients we are seldom without and it’s a vegetarian dish I figured I’d give it a shot. It’s served with a fried egg and even the kids ate it!

Last night it was Chicken Fried Rice on Wilted Spinach. I subsituted the chicken for some minced up Quorn Tenders and it was great. I have never seen the kids eat so much spinach.

I’m looking forward to tonight’s recipe, hopefully it will be as good as the first two.

Just wanted to add a note  about Quorn. It’s great, we first ate it back in the UK. The range of products seems a little more diverse over there. It’s actually fermented myco protein, more like beer that soy.

What’s Your Color?

Wednesday, December 17th, 2008 by Ryan

According to Colorstrology, the colors that we see all around us are a reflection of the sun’s light in all its glory. It is magic made visible. There is nothing more miraculous, unexpected or wondrous than seeing a rainbow appear in the sky. You are part of that rainbow of light and just being born on a particular day under a particular Sun sign offers insights into your personality and nature, there is also a personal color that corresponds to the real you. It is a color that reflects the very essence of your specific birth date.

My dad sent me a link to this Flickr slide show from Barack Obama and his family on election night. It’s a mixture of intimate and public moments. Very nice.

They probably could have edited out the first 20 seconds or so of this video, but I did find myself snickering despite my best intentions.

Electric Cars Almost Ready for Israelis

How the Electric Car Idea Will WorkThis was the great article that I was talking about the other day about how close we are to electric cars. Not physically close, but technologically close.

N is Here

Friday, August 15th, 2008 by Rich

For you Stephen King fans out there, and you graphic novel fans, you should check out N is Here, an “original video series” which appears to be an adaptation of a graphic novel which is an excerpt from an upcoming King novel. Which perhaps is based on the Broadway musical that was based on the original movie which came from the non-musical off-Broadway play. Adapted from the Shakespearean play, Taming of the Shrew, or the movie Dial N for Nurder.

Yet Another Reason Not To Pass Out Drunk in Public

Google Street View Catches Drunk Pass Out

Google Street View caught this Aussie passed out drunk in front of his house.

A man who fell asleep in a drunken stupor on the grass outside his home was horrified to find his embarrassment posted on the internet.

He had been drowning his sorrows over the death of a friend and collapsed after climbing out of a taxi.

As he slept off his excesses, a car-mounted video camera passed by to record pictures of the street for Google’s StreetView website.

Ouch. For more on the story…

Cuil… Sort of Cool

http://www.cuil.com

Designed by Google wiz Anna Patterson, Cuil.com started taking search requests this morning. It’s painfully slow still, but I LOVE the layout of results. All those 9 years ago when I made my first Google search, I was drawn to the simplicity and sense of an “alternative” to the clutter of Yahoo and Altavista. Cuil seems to rekindle a lot of those same feelings.
